Winterising Your Jet Ski Floating Dock: The Complete Guide

Jet skis are some of the most popular personal watercraft you can find in the markets. And if you just bought one or plan to buy one, you must plan for a dock too. Floating docks are some of the popular jet ski docks you will find. One of their top selling points is their low-level maintenance. However, while floating docks have fewer maintenance demands than their traditional counterparts, you must still do your part to keep the dock functional throughout the year.

And you can start by winterising it. Winterising your jet ski floating dock is crucial for its longevity and structural integrity. Ice formations, changing temperatures, and freeze and thaw action, among other risks can wreak havoc on your floating deck if you fail to winterise it properly.

Here are some ways to winterise your jet ski pontoon.

Check Your Local Regulations

Most marinas have regulations regarding the installation and use of docks. Therefore, before you start winterising your jet ski floating dock, it would be best to confirm whether local regulations will dictate how you can do it. For instance, you may be required to remove your floating deck completely, especially if you experience harsh winters. Therefore, knowing existing regulations will go a long way in ensuring that you get it right the first time.

Remove (And Store) Fixtures And Accessories

Detaching and storing accessories and fixtures like handrails, launches, storage containers, ladders, and furniture is the first step to winterising your jet ski floating dock. Doing this keeps them out of any potential shoreline or ice-related dock damages during the winter period.

Tighten Loose Components

It's also vital to inspect your dock for any loose components. Usually, changing temperatures over the winter period may result in loose fittings and components slipping out of place and compromising your dock's structural integrity. Therefore, check and tighten lose bolts, screws, nails, fasteners, etc. And if they are worn or damaged, replace them with new ones.

Clean The Dock

Cleaning is another practical and easy way to prepare your dock for winter. Doing this will make it easier for you to clean up after winter.

Invest In De-icers/Bubblers

Also referred to as aerators or agitators, these devices are an excellent way to reduce ice formation around your jet ski dock, perfect if you don't plan to detach it from the shore. They work by ensuring water moves continuously, preventing ice formation. However, since these devices are installed in the water, it's imperative to use proper signage for other boaters to know their location in the lake, river, pond, etc. You can use lights, which will be handy during the night.
